John Grisham – The Litarary Lawyer
Most people do not know John Grisham and do not regard him as any important. In contrast to that most people, who know him, have learned to esteem him as a man who is writing books in order to express his opinion on topics, which are important for him, especially the American justice system.Sometimes the criticism is evident, sometimes it rather happens in the undertone. John Grisham has written 24 novels by now and sold more than 250mio. copies in 40 languages, making him the bestselling author of the 1990´s. Nevertheless he has always stayed down-to-earth and never started to overestimate himself.
“My success was not planned, but it could only happen in America.” said Grisham once and this view is not very far from the reality away. John Grisham is a very good allegory for the “American Dream”, though he did not start with nothing. This is the track record of a man who was born at the end of the 20th century and who seems to have found his designation in life:
John Grisham, the second oldest of five siblings, was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on the 8th of February in 1955 into a Southern Baptist family. As his father was an itinerant construction worker the family moved frequently from town to town until they settled down in Southhaven, Mississippi in 1967. John always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player but he soon had to recognise that he has not enough talent.
During his childhood and youth his mother, a housewife, consistently encouraged him to read in order to make him able to get a good education which Grisham´s parents never had. However, this was not the main reason which made him write in his later years. Grisham described his childhood this way: “I grew up in a very small, close-knit, Southern Baptist family, where everything was off-limits. So I couldn’t wait to get to college and have some fun. And I did for the first two years. And I regret a lot of it, because my grades were in terrible shape. I never got in serious trouble, except for my grades.”
After having finished highschool in 1973 and having earned a bachelor´s degree in accounting 1977, Grisham shifted his interests from tax law to criminal law and litigation. He finally earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981. In the same year John graduated he also married Renee Jones Grisham. Together they have two children, Ty (*1984) and Shea (*1986). After his studies Grisham had established a small law practice in Southhaven, where he focused on criminal law and civil law representing a broad spectrum of clients, and was elected into the Mississippi House of Represantives in 1983.
By both jobs he gained invaluable experiences for his later wrting career.
There was mainly one event that made Grisham start writing. In 1984 he watched a lawsuit in 1984 and witnessed the horrifying testimony of a 12-year-old rape victim. Inspired he started to write every day before his work and on the basis of the real case Grisham told what would have happened if the father of the girl had killed the attackers. Nearly all of his novels have in common that they are based on true events.Having finished “A Time To Kill” in 1987 Grisham tried to find a publisher for his first novel. Being quite unknown and not able to convince with the plot Grisham was rejected by 28 publishers until a small and unknown publisher, Wynwood Press, agreed to print 5000 copies. Finally “A Time To Kill” was published in June 1988 and was not unexpected quite unsuccessfull. Those copies who could not have been sold were bought by Grisham himself and he went from bookshop to bookshop and tried to sell them. He even organized a big party in a library but nevertheless it took some time to get rid of all exemplars. But Grisham did not give up. After he had finished “A Time To Kill” he had already begun the work on a second novel. He wanted to have one more shot, one more try. Willing to spend more time with his family and to concentrate on his writing he did not seek reelection into the House of Represantives in 1990 and a fairly long time later he closed his law practice and moved his family to Oxford, Mississippi.
1991 was the year of Grisham´s break through. Before even having found a publisher he sold the film rights for his novel “The Firm” for 600 000$. That was also the event that made many publishers become interested in Grisham. At last 7 million copies of “The Firm” were sold, which made it the bestselling novel of 1991. That was the beginning of an uncomparable career. From now on Grisham averaged one book per year, most of them very popular bestsellers. He authored seven number-one bestselling novels of the year (1994 The Chamber, 1995 The Rainmaker, 1998 The Street Lawyer, 1999 The Testament, 2000 The Brethren, 2002 The Summons, and 2005 The Broker). In this decade, however, he has tried to expand his horizons. He published his first book of nonfiction, "The Innocent Man"(2006), a serious look at a miscarriage of justice in Oklahoma, and a short story collection, “Ford County”(2009), which includes stories “too good, not to be published and too short to be published in a whole book”. He has also published four novels that do not involve lawyers at all: "A Painted House"(2001) about growing up poor in Arkansas; "Bleachers"(2003) about high school football; "Skipping Christmas"(2001) about the horrors of life without Christmas; and "Playing for Pizza" (2007) about an American football player in Italy. Ten films have been made out of his novels by now and some more are planned as well as
Today John Grisham lives with his family on a farm in Oxford, Mississippi and on a plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia. He is still engaged in politics and has contributed over 400 000$ to democratic candidates since 1996. Furthermore he keeps up with his greatest passion baseball: Six baseball fields have been built on his property which play host to over 350 kids. Grisham has always wanted to write a book about baseball but the ideas would not have come to him yet. After the destruction of the Gulf Coast by the hurricane Katrina in 2005 Grisham and his wife donated over 5 million dollar for the rebuild of the disaster area. Moreover Grisham calls himself a moderate baptist, he has already performed mission service for his church in Brazil which is also the setting for two of his novels (The Testament & The Partner). Grisham is also a board member of “The Innocence Project”, an association which was founded to exonerate wrongfully convicted people and to reform the criminal justice system.
All in all John Grisham is a person who tries to comprise his experiences in life into his books. Therefore all of his novels are a sort of criticism or statement about the society we are living in. Nevertheless his books are mainly written to entertain and –of course- to be sold. According to that he said: “I’d love to write great literature. I’d love to be a great writer. I’d love to write really good, serious books. And I’d want them to sell.” If you encountered John Grisham today you would meet a happy and satisfied man who has not lost his contact to reality: “Ten years from now I plan to be sitting here, looking out over my land. I hope I’ll be writing books, but if not, I’ll be on my pond fishing with my kids. I feel like the luckiest guy I know.”. The society may look forward to all of John Grisham´s books that will be published in the future.
Danke
