I'm gonna copy my post from /r/dota2 to explain the main problems (and adding some context for people who are not familiar with dota):
It's not about Diretide. It's about the way Valve approaches the community in general. Let's recap:
The overall development speed of the game seemed to have slowed down. This might be for several reasons, they might work on a big update, they might have shrunk the development team after release etc. All those reasons are fine, but because they don't communicate at all, nobody knows. In contrast, people from Riot (The devs of LoL) post on their forums daily.
The Halloween mode "Diretide" was announced as an annual event last year, and there were (unused) Halloween art assets included in some of the latest Dota patches.
On October 8th the Diretide thread was created in the Dota dev-forum, from then on the community hyped itself up for this event.
To this day, Valve has not announced that there is no Diretide this year, they instead watched how the hype built up and decided not to react to it at all, even though they could have easily deflated it from the start.
Instead of addressing the completely hyped up community, they released a tiny patch yesterday that simply added more microtransaction-items.
How they expected this to not blow up is beyond me. But it comes down to the factor that Valve does not have PR people or community managers and nobody felt responsible to address the community (because nobody really is). I am always a bit bewildered when I hear interviews with Valve-employers who are proud that they have no real PR people, considering how badly they could need them. It's not just the Diretide thing, starting from the release of Halflife 2 they were notoriously bad at PR and communication.
And that is what it comes down to. The community got the feeling that they have no way of getting heard because they are not acknowledged at all and they react in the only way that is possible - by getting louder.
'Maturity,' father had slowly begun,' Is knowing you're wrong and accepting it, son. There's prudence in pausing with patience and joy - And hearing the wisdom in others, my boy. 'A person's perspective,' he said with a smile, 'Is plain if you walk in their shoes for a while. | And if you can do it - if maybe you do - You might understand, and agree that it's true.' I followed his reasons, and nodded, polite; Perhaps that was logic - perhaps he was right. Perhaps there was truth in his claim all along... 'I'm twenty,' I countered: 'I'm right, and you're wrong.' |
