Basically, there is an online browsergame called Tribal Wars that I have played a lot as a kid. The game is very typical for games of that time. You start in your village and build it up, slowly growing it until you are strong enough to conquer (or in other similar browser games sometimes found) your next village, which is often very costly but eventually worth it. You then go and conquer more and more villages and grow exponentially.
A lot of the game is about managing your villages, recruiting troops and avoiding overexpansion without falling behind. It had a lot of specific micromanagement of troops and combat that was simply automatically calculated (you send your troops and they fight the defenders), and obviously, war with other players and the game-specific tactics where a big part as well.
Now, this type of game scratched a specific itch for me. The itch was about carefully growing your village and risking a lot getting a 2nd one, feeling slightly insecure about your advancement (as in being open to attacks), and enjoying the feeling of consolidation as you eye your 3rd and 4th targets. Eventually, you become bigger and bigger, your empire raging to hundreds, sometimes thousands of villages. All while you carefully observe your opponents, other big players who raise their empire in a similar fashion, until you eventually clash with someone who is as big as you and it becomes quite the struggle.
And there were so many cool aspects. The feeling of consolidation after doing a big wave of expansion. That sense of progress when your empire has gained additional kingdoms and you slowly feel (in terms of troops) your military and economic power rising. I spent hours just watching the maps, comparing the history of each world's (server's) borders, planning my next attacks, and carefully thinking about in which direction I would want to grow, all while I spent my time doing micromanagement (you could farm other villages for resources, or spend time building up your villages and armies).
I know that this is super specific, but I would really love to find something similar that scratches the same itch. I cannot play the Browsergame as it is incredibly slow paced and it takes weeks and months of intense focus to achieve what I was describing. In the game, it takes a couple of weeks just to build up your own village (a time in which you mostly do nothing except check the game a couple of times a day). Also, the player base has obviously shrunk, so the developers have leaned towards more and more P2W in the last decade, effectively ruining the game.
So I am looking for a single (or multiplayer) game in a similar fashion.
There are some games that have some aspects that scratch this itch for me. Civilization can be similar in that you spend time managing cities and expansion feels similarly rewarding. In some aspects, Stellaris is like that because it is a lot about expansion and consolidation. However, Civ is very small scale because there is so much more micro-management, and Stellaris is more about the space-exploration-mystery and diplomacy aspect.
A weird game that kinda felt cool too is territorial.io, but it's way too fast-paced and shallow (I know its difficult to please me lol). I guess a game that is kinda in the middle would be so awesome.
I am just looking for any kind of game that comes to your mind, no matter the age. Thank you all in advance for taking your time to read this.
Edit: Also, if you have any idea of other sub-reddits where I could ask about this I would appreciate some direction!
edit2: I forgot to mention: I have played all Paradox games already and they're good and I have obviously enjoyed them, but they're not what I am looking for.
